June 25, 2008: Ellsworth Votes for Tax Relief for Middle-Class Hoosiers

Bill Cuts Federal Incomes Taxes for Over 36,500 8th District Households

WASHINGTON - Rep. Brad Ellsworth today voted to provide income tax relief to thousands of middle-class Hoosier taxpayers. The AMT Relief Act of 2008 cuts federal income taxes for approximately 36,500 households in the 8th District by preventing them from paying the higher Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). The AMT was originally implemented to ensure very wealthy individuals do not avoid paying income tax, but because it is not adjusted for inflation, the tax now threatens to raise taxes on middle-class families in Indiana. The House passed the tax relief measure today, 233-189.
